The Vietnam War started secretly off the books, like so many of these ventures that have ended disastrously. The CIA got there early, soon after the Vietnamese won their independence from the French in 1954.
President Lyndon Johnson: It is my duty to the American people to report that renewed hostile actions against United States ships on the high seas in the Gulf of Tonkin have today required me to order the military forces of the United States, to take action and reply.
Moyers: This President was not telling the truth either. The action at the Gulf of Tonkin was not unprovoked. South Vietnam had been conducting secret raids in the area against the North and the American destroyer, ordered into the battle zone, had advanced warning it could be attacked. But Johnson seized the incident to stampede Congress into passing the Gulf of Tonkin resolution. He then used it as a blank check for the massive buildup of American forces.

  • It's cool to have a 'moment of silence' at the end of such a compelling video clip, but not 2 minutes. Oly comes from left field. Take the time to splice better and it will do much better

  • @supercat821 There's another way to look at it. People can learn to use the scroll bar. Think outside the box.

    Thx for watching!

  • I feel like in 40 years people will start talking about 9/11 as we are talking about the Gulf of Tonkin incident today. Sadly, our generation may well be known as the idiots who fell for it again. I just hope that we can get Ron Paul into office so that he can get us the hell out already.

  • Any unilateral military action resulting in an invasion of a foreign territory without an external or internal attack upon the USA to justify it is contrary to the ideals that this nation was founded upon, and should never even be seriously considered as a foreign policy. The above is especially true if the war is unpopular, was based on lies, has no clear objective and requires conscripts to fight. Furthermore, Vietnam wasted needed resources and escalated the conflict with the USSR and China.

  • @supercat821 I was referring to the grass roots army of e-activists who post videos like this to blogs/social networking sites

You and I already know and agree on these matters. I assume you post these clips so the message is effectively spread. My advice speaks to such a motivation

  • Yes, the Vietnam War was bad but the Democrats wouldn't let our troops fight, and while you can discuss the CIA ad naseum, please don't ignore the Soviet role.
