This is my entry into the Kanilea "Spread the Aloha" Ukulele Give-Away Contest on Ukulele Underground. I'm spreading the aloha by finally writing an original song and getting first the fellow ukers at my circle to play along and then out into the world at large. Grab your ukes, guitars, pianos, mandolins, anything and please join in.

I had just finished writing this song before the Vancouver Ukulele Circle meeting this Tuesday. So, this video captures the first time I've ever performed this song. It's a 12- bar blues in Quick 4. So the chord sequence (after the intro) is:

A7 D7 A7 A7
D7 D7 A7 A7
E7 D7 A7 E7

There's 6 verses. Last verse, end on A. Go ahead! Solo on the instrumental verse. You know you want to!

Early in the Evening - copyright Gopher Productions, 2010

(A7)From early in the morning, til (D7) early in the evening,
Ain't (A7) too much happenin', barely got any feeling
Til (D7) early in the evening, there ain't too much going on. (A7)
But (E7) when the night time comes, that's (D7) when I get my groove on. (A7 E7)

Work most ev'ry day, don't let it get in my way.
I do what I need to, to collect my pay.
Til early in the evening, there ain't too much going on.
But when the night time comes baby, that's when I get my groove on.

Instrumental

Hey, pretty baby. Is it yes, no, or maybe?
Tell me what my chances are of you being my lady.
Til early in the evening, there ain't too much going on.
But when the night time comes baby, I'll love you from dusk til dawn.

You can call be lazy, that don't really phase me.
You can call me crazy, but I'll still play my ukulele.
All night long, all night long.
Oh when the night time comes baby, I'll get my groove on.

Final instrumental verse/ improvised vocal.

Thanks to Peter Dunn for filming this! You can find his music at

Also thanks to Ron Usher on uke bass, Andy Smith on guitar, and Tom Saunders on ukulele for being an impromptu blues band.

  • @LaMelodieHiladih Thank you! :-)

  • Great singing, really! Thats a good blues!

  • @ctrymaus Thanks, Mousie! It was a lot of fun and a little bit scary cause I just finished the song before driving over. But that made it more fun.

  • Very cool! I loved the singing, and I loved everyone being involved! :-)
