Our first Xbox 360 upload... and our first HD home console upload... for Project Gotham Racing 3! It's one game in the popular PGR series developed by Bizarre Creations which has won several awards and broken various records in the game world. It is considered the spiritual sucessor to Dreamcast's "Metropolis Street Racer" when it launched on the original Xbox due to recycled content and similarities between both games (not to mention the same developers did both).
For a launch game, Project Gotham Racing 3 is an amazing game. PGR3 features 80 licensed supercars from over 30 manufacturers and five classes (E to A) that move at 170mph or more, four different cities to drive through that feature various circuits, the ability to play "Geometry Wars" games, the ability to design your own race circuits, amazing attention to detail visually (whether it's the actual circuits themselves or things people don't usually focus on like car interiors, the game looks amazing), good music, and more realistic driving mechanics which have a bit of a learning curve if you're not familiar with games in the series. Most cars can be played with by default in most modes, but the bulk of the game, Career Mode, requires you to work your way up the ranks to earn money and the game's signature "Kudos" (points earned through fancy driving or stunts which can help you earn concept cars and the like) to become competitive. You won't really be able to afford anything better than E Class cars at first, which can make winning fairly difficult, but once you improve your rides and work your way up the leaderboard, Career Mode is pretty cool.
This is a video of the game in action, using a pretty crummy car (comparatively speaking in-game, not in real life) on average difficulty. For those curious, here's a little bit from the manual:
"The combined price and performance stats for all of the 75-plus cars featured in PGR3 add up to some pretty impressive totals. For example, in the unlikely event you could track down and then purchase the real-world versions of each of the cars included in the game, you would need to write checks for a grand total of more than $22 million dollars (U.S.). And, what would you be getting for that kind of cash?"
- More than 400,000 cc's of total engine capacity
- More than 41,000 horsepower
- 710 cylinders
- An average top speed of 196.7 mph
Enjoy.
The third game in the Project Gotham Racing series by the now-defunct Bizarre Creations... and an awesome racer on the Xbox 360. I really wish they didn't close up, but I blame Activision for their stupid decisions. It's a shame because I also liked Fur Fighters, Metropolis Street Racer, and Geometry Wars.
