This is a quite traditional Hutsul format--i.e., violin accompanying someone singing "kolomyjky." Kolomyjky are set, traditional verses that are sung to this and other, similar melodies; but one can also always improvise new kolomyjky!

I videoed this in the town of Kosiv, state of Ivano-Frankivsk in western Ukraine, in the summer of 2004. It was part of the annual Ivana Kupala (Summer Solstice, or Feast of St John the Baptist) celebrations. There was a small Hutsul folk festival, and also that weekend was the Sheshory Music Festival in a field in nearby Sheshory.

The violinist is a virtuoso Hutsul player who can (possibly!) be found, in the summertime, playing with his band at the Arkan restaurant in Sheshory and at festivals all over the Kolomija-Kosiv-Kosmach part of Hutsulshchyna.
