Spanish Florida (Spanish: La Florida) refers to the Spanish colony of Florida. The Spanish first landed on the peninsula in 1513, and laid claim to the land from 1565 to 1763 and again from 1784 to 1821.

In 1559, Tristán de Luna y Arellano established a brief settlement in Pensacola

The Spanish founded San Agustín (St. Augustine in English) in 1565. Settled by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, it was the first permanent European settlement in the continental United States and the oldest that has been continuously occupied.

A visit from the king would be a real honor. It would take the year-long celebration of Pensacola's founding to a new level of success for this community. During their time here we hope Señor Portoles and his party will get a real introduction to Pensacola and come to understand the importance of this celebration. And to understand just how happy it will make us all here to welcome the king to Pensacola, the site of his country's first settlement attempt in North America. Pensacola is no longer technically part of Spain. But we have not forgotten our connection to the country whose flag first graced these shores. As we enter 2009 and the 450th anniversary, we remain fully aware of our unbreakable ties to Spain. To have the king bless the celebration with his presence will cap the festivities and complete the circle that began 450 years ago, when Don Tristan de Luna - sailing in the name of another king - arrived on these shores and began the long history of Pensacola.

  • It's a shame that people in the U.S. often forget that Spain aided the United States in their war for independence.

  • Gracias Florida!

  • disculpa yo no soy un sur americano pero creo que aqui no se ve algo malo acerca de espana si no una gran historia que contar be carful what you say

  • @ttiiyy YES, Spanish and French cooperation was profit-seeking. Like England's support of Portugal has always been. But the fact is that while you recognize the French help and friendship -Marquis of Lafayette and so on- you have never done something similar with the sizeable Spanish contribution, nearly as huge as that of France.

Historically, the US are within the English tradition (language, law...), no doubts about that. But many Spanish contributions should be better known as well.

  • @ttiiyy "[...] the Spanish-American war of 1898 was even more serious than the war of 1812. If the US had lost, the Spanish empire would have punished the US severely".

Hahaha, what a joker you are, sir. Aside from anti-Spanish troll. There were no "Spanish empire" in 1898, just Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Phillipines remained. You blew up your own ship, the Maine, to get an excuse and simply take over. Of course, officially it was to "free Cubans from the Spanish yoke" -like now in Iraq.
