This is the beginning of the Red Rock Tornado from 4/26/1991. It started just SW of Billings OK. We were looking SW initially then watched as it went S and then SE of us. Later we caught back up with it just after it crossed I-35. I processed it in HD just to get all of the quality I could.

  • @duckboy1213 It's in Billings OKLAHOMA, not MT.

  • Looks like an EF-3 tornado.

  • Nope, it was rated an F4. The EF system did not exist back in 1991.

  • Heh, Billings stumped me at first. But Red Rock/1991 = quickly recognized. I don't believe I have ever seen the beginning stages shown here on the video, just the wedge portion of its life. Such amazing vortex action. Hell, such an amazing tornado in general. Extremely impressive and historic footage.

  • I was all prepared to be surprised at a multi-vortex tornado in Montana, until you mentioned there was a Billings and Red Rock in Oklahoma.

  • To me, hail is one of the scariest weather sounds.

  • Billings Oklahoma!? You sure? - Billings, MT has the red rocks too.

  • @duckboy1213 and the tornado warnings yesterday

  • @Torn80cj Very likely that happened as it was an F-5 and grass was torn out of the ground. I saw the video which showed the asphalt road ripped up by the Red Rock tornado that was being studied by the storm chasers from the univ. of Okla. I believe.

Doopler radar measured winds above the surface at 260mph. as I recall.

  • @soonerk5 I heard the Jarrell TX tornado did the same thing. But I don't know if it was a reliable source or not.

  • Suction vortices making themselves known. Wow.
