Stereo sound on video-streaming sites shouldn't be too much to ask for in the days of better bandwidth and surround-sound, but at this time it seems impossible to upload new stuff and the stereo track easily retained. Believe it or not, even Facebook videos were stereo and have now regressed to mono. Excuse the next bit of tech-waffle. Some people have successfully uploaded stereo videos here using the .flv conversion before uploading method (info on the sizes and bitrates are found easily on searching for stereo videos), but as of recently, following that conversion method (as I have with this clip) leads to YT converting it to the standard 64kbit mono track within minutes of uploading. The better quality stereo track is still accessible, though the picture suffers a bit because the original conversion has to be set at a low bitrate. If you've tried uploading a video in stereo using the above method and quickly lost the sound to mono, then the simple instruction below should give you and your viewers access to the stereo version, albeit via a link. If anyone knows an immediate, good quality and current way to get stereo on YouTube, please post in the comments. (Maybe YouTube itself might consider going stereo officially!)

Just add the catchy &fmt=18 onto the http address at the top (remembering to de-select the rest of the text first), then refresh to get a stereo version. Probably best to test it first. Then copy that new address into your video info as above (including the http:// stuff), which upon saving should become a clickable "hyperlink". That seems to work at the time of posting this.
