Quite possibly the best battle I've ever recorded.

Atma Weapon possesses many moves that are equal to either instant or slow death to a low level party. Getting to him and witnessing that is one of the reasons to play a low level game in FF3/6. You will lose uncountable times, but you will enjoy every last moment of the experience.

Before I won I had been fighting him non-stop for three hours. My hands were slightly shaking, my brain was lagging behind the situation in the battle and I was about as tired as people tend to get tired while playing their favourite game.

So, what should one fear from Atma Weapon?

His normal physical moves knock out anyone but Gau in a single hit, making HP recovery unnecessary. Full Power instantly KO's any party member it hits. Flare and Bio pose no risk, because we have made a point to wear Wall Rings. Quake only recovers our HP due to our awesome three sets of Gaia Gear. Fire2 is also reflected, and neither W Wind nor Quartr are able to KO anyone.

However, there are moves that ruin whatever success you've hade before you see them. Meteo destroys everyone. A full-party Blaze kills everyone but Gau, and leaving him alone on auto-pilot raging Aspik is delaying the inevitable loss. Finally, Mind Blast inflicts random 2 status effects on each party member. You either get lucky with it or it is fatal.

The battle started surprisingly fortunate. I made a couple mistakes in the beginning because I had been trying to beat him for a few hours without stopping, and did it rather sloppily. Gau was raging Aspik, Strago started by using Step Mine and Locke was eagerly anticipating the moment someone gets hit so that he can do what he does best - use items, that is, for the lack of any decent offensive skill.

After Strago has used Step Mine, both the old man and the treasure hunter (a thief, if you're interested in my honest view) sit there waiting either for an opportunity to revive/heal or pull off another Step Mine through co-operation.

I'll explain, everytime Atma uses Flare/Bio/Quake, everyone needn't worry about having to recover or revive immediately. This allows Strago to Step Mine once more, given that he has the MP, and Locke aid him with Tincture. This is not absolutely safe, however, and the best choice is to rely on Gau solely and let the two do the reviving.

Some time later, Atma Weapon will enter his second phase and use a move he normally wouldn't. In my case, that was Fire2, conveniently made harmless thanks to the awesomeness that is the mighty Wall Ring. This was a signal: "jump the hell up!"

Mind Blast was coming our way and everyone but Gau luckily avoided it. Gau got petrified and doomed, which was better than anything I would've expected.

By this time I concentrated and acted more heroically than in the first 4 minutes of the battle. I had both the necropedophile and the old far jump up again, as Flare Star was coming. Gau was petrified and didn't suffer at all.

I was short of breath already but the fun stuff was just about to begin. Gau gets cured of petrification and, still doomed, starts raging Bomb. This was the decision that saved the game, as Blazes about to start being spammed on our party, would heal Gau instead of nearly killing him.

Meanwhile, Atma begins those annoying moves that do not kill you unless you are at 1 HP. Believing in common sense, I only bothered to heal those at exactly 1 HP and no more, and the geezer got quickly owned by the furious Atma. Locke followed his fate after a Blaze.

The remaining minute of the battle Gau solos against Atma, and it can only be explained by our insane luck that he gets out, getting Blazed exactly when he is about to die.

This is epic, no kidding.

  • how did you even get up here at such a low level? i mean i always thought when you kill a boss even if you ran from every encounter you'd have to gain some level

  • @Dagreat

Bosses don't provide experience in this game

  • @MoogleBoss

    lol seriously? wow

I've beaten this game so many times and i never noticed.

    btw epic video

  • @Dagreat

There are always ways to get money in this game. Locke can steal and there is plenty of stuff to be stolen and sold, like Dragonboots.

Gaia Gears can be acquired early by stealing before you even travel to Thamasa.

  • Its nice to see that people share my interest in keeping low levels to make the game a challenge. I'm tired of seeing videos of people easily beating bosses that are supposed to be hard all because they have higher levels than they are supposed to have. Goddamn pussy's xD

  • True, most RPG videos on YouTube show very unfair battles due to the players' overpreparation or overlevelling.

But playing without overlevelling and playing a restricted challenge with strict rules are two different things.

  • Thanks a lot! I'll have to try to do that. I love this game, it's rapidly overtaking VII as my favourite. I think I'll need to mute the volume as the Veldt theme tune gets annoying rather quickly. I've been trying to learn all the rages for a while now. I think I somehow missed meeting a Bountyman however, which means I won't be able to complete them. Doh!

  • This battle's theme is really epic!

  • Great numbers game for this fighter. I figure he may have not even used to much of the esper stat bonuses at all. This is how all video game players should play their games, let luck and knowledge lead to victory.

  • 2 Feeble creatures couldn't beat Atma

  • where is shadow? o.O

  • @Schloonktapooxis

I made it there at level 7 XD but I used a phoenix down on the train lol.

  • "getting Blazed exactly when he is about to die.

    This is epic, no kidding."

  • Not sure if it was mentioned, but Demi and Quartr CAN kill someone once their health is at 1. I learned the hard way that these spells round up to the nearest.whole number in damage calculation.

  • That ending was almos as funny as a healer defeating a Boss with a melee atack when all the party is dead... Great job, epic battle, as battles with Ultima and Atma should always be ;o

  • jesus...thats a great low level game example!!!!
