John Cipollina and Friends recorded in Roseville, Calif sometime in the mid eighties, i happened by and recorded this with a cassette blaster type stereo. Song is Gotta Ride Out. I made a quick video to attach the song to, quality of the recording isnt that great but its a great song, sorry about the irrelevent video. Musicians are Barry Melton, Greg Douglass, John Cipollina, Merle Saunders, probably spencer Dryden and Greg Elmore on drums, not sure, and I think its the guy that owns the car lot they were playing at singing this song, maybe other musicians i left out, that was a long time ago, could have been Peter Albin on bass but im not sure on that either

  • sgrroiii is right, its the Novato Frank Band, it's listed on the John Cipollina site on the page that has all his performances listed. I didnt get all the band members right, but they are listed there too.

  • It was mainly the members of the dinasours, but with greg douglass, three guitar players, 2 drummers, i figure Greg Elmore was there, I think the singer (of this song) owned the car lot they were playing at. He may have hired the band to sell more cars, or he could have been a member of one of Cipollinas various bands, I dont know his name but it was recorded at a Roseville, Calif car lot. I'm not sure who the horn player was either.

  • There may be 4 or 5 more songs on the cassette, I didnt record the whole thing, I'll try to get them transfered over to the computer this week sometime. Thanks Unviciouscircle, this is probably the most kickass version of this song ive heard.

  • I have some "Novato Frank Band" but don't have this one, it's a good one! Glad you got it & shared it.

  • @TheRatteth you are so right in the "Most kickass" version, I think this is a real blinder ..get's a good regular airing on my iPod too..again thanks for sharing this "Gem"

  • Funny how you can clearly distinguish the different guitars even on this tape! John & Douglass dueled so well.... I find the 'ambient sounds' interesting w this... especially the motorbike lol. Rev...rev.... Sometimes things like that bring you in the moment better than 'prim n proper' recordings... Why some of us Deadhead were not always totally crazy for soundboards lol

  • @unviciouscircle Thank you Dave :-)

  • Awesome song and sound for being recorded at a car lot of all places.

John really rips off a great run w, some ass kicking licks.

Does my heart so good to hear it .

Thanks so very much for putting this Gem up for us Cip junkies .
