  • is it hard to start the draft? A standard chimney goes up your goes up and down?

  • There is actually quite an exceptionally good draft - enough so that it is possible to start a "top down" fire (paper placed on top of the wood kindling)

  • Nice home

  • i can build that for less than10 grand, they got ripped off bad.

  • Great set up,,, I'm assuming for $20,000 on the masonry heater .. A mason came in and built it. .Was the core modular or built from scratch? Either way it"s a great deal. Forced air propane heater would probably be way way more .

This system has been common in Europe before central heating became the standard. I grew up with it. I have a heater much like the one shown here but made of soapstone, which comes from Finland, where many homes have this system. Apparently this is just about being discovered by Americans/Canadians.

The draft is no problem, and the combustion is very clean. We always burn our fire top-down. Paper is not used, we use small starter cubes.
