The key to great singing is the ability to sing beautiful phrases. This is what Calleja does so well and what people react positively to. I have heard voices of equal beauty, power etc. that fall short because the singer does not really know how to sing phrases.
@TsarBovov You idiot. Nothing could be further from the truth. This man has never used a microphone for amplification. He doesn't need it. I know this for a fact.
Add to that the fact that this show adds reverb to every singer. Not just Calleja.
Amazing. We all know that he is using microphones in the opera houses, but even in a little TV studio he does not dare to sing without amplification and reverb. Awful.
Nothing like a live studio gig just you & the piano to tell all. Don't know where i have been but just discovered Calleja on youtube. Been listening to clips from 2007 on. Timbre and hue and releases were much warmer in the early (age 29?) than 09 & 010. Then I hear a La Donna Mobile & now the Verdi in 2011 & he morphs into another level of maturity. Understand all this fine critiquing after 2 whole hours. I do hear a brighter, silky Bjorlingnesque, anxious to hear what he becomes in 5 years.
