They also list James Brown over Curtis Mayfield; are we talking about singing? David Bowie, Mick Jagger & Freddie Mercury over Micahel Jackson? @TheChaChaka Yeah, Mariah's recent material comes off as arrogant, but shes still a talented composer. My issue w/ the comparison is that u can hear the cracks & breaks in Rachelles voice when she hits it. They are just sustained notes, no melody. Mariah has often hit whistle just by speaking. I an old interview, she once exclaimed What?! and it was in whistle. It's part of her natural voice. It's like Rachelle woke up 1 day & found she could make that sound. Still a great soul vocalist tho.

@rocknox I couldn't agree with you more. Some people think they're being cool or original by heaping praise on Rachelle over Mariah as she's the lesser known but the fact is Mariah is technically a far superior singer than Rachelle. They can both do amazing things with their voices but Mariah is still, to this day, the best pop soprano there has ever been in recording history it's just a shame her material lately is pretty crap and she has lost the charisma she had when younger.

For people who is comparing Rachelle and Mariah. There is a huge difference between Mariah's obviously Pop & R&B style and Rachelle's Classic Soul. Mariah is also an aesthetic singer and more technical than expressing emotion. Rachelle has a lot of emotion since soul music is that. When it comes to whistle? MARIAH, why? She can create melody. She layers them with her background vocals, and she can make words and create on pitch melismas. Rachelle just makes the sound without any melody.
