Taken in May 2007 at Zagan in Poland. In 1944 it was Sagan in Germany, Stalag Luft III, one of several Prisoner of War camps for captured Allied airmen. Here occurred "The Great Escape" of 76 officers through the tunnel called 'Harry'. 50 escapers were murdered on Hitler's orders. The video shows Harry's tunnel start and line, along with our trusty CX500 motorcycles. See my website www.robdavis.webhop.org/gt_esc for the full details of the Great Escape.

  • Alas, no. The shaft drive CX500s don't leand themselves to aerobatics!

  • The fourth Great Escape tunnel has been excavated and re-sealed by British experts. See the fascinating details discovered about George in an exclusive 7 September 2011 article posted on scotsman.com entitled Lost Great Escape Tunnel is Pinpointed.

  • Many thanks for that, I've printed the pages and added them to my archives. I'll go back to Zagan one day!

  • George?? No, they were Tom, Dick, and Harry....

  • Yes, a 4th tunnel was called George, but this post-dates the Great Escape.

  • i visited the museum last month, i did the POW long march with the RAF as a memorial to remember the veterans. It was the most amazing experiance i have ever done in my life and it is something that i wil never forget. Them boys who dug that tunnel are some of the most remarkable men is history.

  • Bear in mind that the tree line outside the camp has also changed.

    Thanks for filming!

  • I am asuming that because you were on a biking trip, and were visiting the site of the great escape, you replicated the famous bike jump over the border's fence.

  • @jpjonesy They found parts of a pump, one of the carts and a range of other escape objects. I am not sure it it is still on youtube but there was a documentary by Channel 4 (UK) which followed the excavation, also showed modern day RAF officers digging a new tunnel. I think tunnel george went beneath the theatre into the guards weapon stores- the prisoners wanted to be able to arm themselves in case of emergency.

  • Has Tunnel George been excavated? If so, when? Also, did they find anything?

  • Theres also tunnel George in theatre i dont know if you knew that its been dug up very soon. We stayed a night in stalag luft 3 in tents around the theatre, the atmosphere from amazing.
