The Turkish Sultan Mehmed V Reshad Visiting Bitola

Scene from the movie from 1911, in duration of 16 minutes.

The movie is created in standard technique, without sound, in black and white and 35mm.

The Manaki Brothers filmed the second part of the documentary about the visit of the penultimate Turkish Sultan, Mehmed Reshad V, during his visit to Bitola/Monastir. The film begins with a sequence of the arrival of the Sultan at Bitola railway station and his journey to the premises of the Bitola Municipality where he resided during his stay in the town. The most impressive part of this story follows in an outstandingly long sequence, the parade held in honour of the Sultan, which took place in front of the Municipality Building, with the participation of all peoples and religious communities of the Ottoman Empire, as well as representatives of all social, political, military and religious organizations. Both children and elder people were present. Besides this parade, the film records several of the Sultan's parade promenades along the streets of Bitola, as well as his trip and stay in Tumbe Cafe, a picnic site near Bitola. The film ends with the Sultan's departure from Bitola railway station.

The Manaki brothers opened the first cinema in Bitola/Monastir, first open-air (1921), then covered (1923).

Their archive of film footage was deposited in the State Archive of the Yugoslav Socialist Republic of Macedonia in 1955, and transferred to the Cinémathèque of the Republic of Macedonia in 1976.

The annual Manaki Brothers International Film Camera Festival, commemorating them, is held in Bitola.
