Controversial tree lightings held Tuesday

Several tree lightings were held Tuesday as the Rhode Island State House lit its holiday tree. Many protested Governor Chafee's decision to not call it a Christmas tree.

Not many people know this but "Christmas trees" actually have nothing to do Christmas. It was an old Norse tradition to bring a bit of life and spring indoors. It only became a German tradition later on but still had no Christmas connection. The tree only gained The Christmas connection when queen Victoria of England put a decorated tree in her palace to commemorate her husbands German background.
