One out of every four Japanese at 65 or older is troubled by senile deafness, which translates into approximately 6.75 million people. However, even those people can now enjoy TV and audio equipment. Filltune from TEAC is a bone conduction headphone which directly transfers sound vibrations to the bone, instead of the eardrum. People with senile deafness often find it more difficult to hear clear sound than when they're younger. The new headphone allows them to feel the original sound. Weighing only 120 grams, Filltune relieves the risk of damaging the eardrum with a large sound. The conventional bone conduction headphone has a narrow frequency band, and cannot reproduce high-frequency sounds, making it unsuitable for producing Hi-Fi sound. Filltune uses an ultra-magnetostrictive transducer as a component to transform electronic signals to sound vibrations. This transducer has expanded the human auditory range from 20KHz to 25KHz. Filltune now sells at approximately 50,000 yen. TEAC expects to ship 6,000 units in the first year.
