i was caught in a rip a few years back whilst off the coast in south india, i had no idea what to do and started heading for shore which was getting me nowhere, luckily someone close to me started pointing for me to swim parralel to the beach and suddenly i was released and was able to swim back to shore, i got back very tired and shaken by the whole episode, i totally respect the sea now.
i got stuck in a rip current one, 3rd time surfing, man that was scary and yes they are a silent killer, byt the time i got i was so exausted i had to call it quits for the day
Its easy to say then do but...... go/swim with the flow!!
I have been canoueingand kajaking all my live, reef swimming/free diving in indonesia and live in alaska wading/crossing rivers all the time and i am still amazed how poverful deceptive and tricky water can be!
Yeah, I almost drowned recently here in San Diego. Got stuck in a monster rip that was also ripping laterally right into a jetty. Took me a half hour to get out because I couldn't JUST paddle sideways.
Absolutley. My husband got stuck in one in Waemea Bay and nearly drowned. You cannot swim out of these things, you have to let the flow take you sideways to get out of it. Terrifying.
I've been in water like that, except the wave frequency was even higher (More waves with less lull time between them). I was on a boogey board with boarding fins, and despite the fact that I stayed out of the rip, I still had trouble making any progress simply from kicking. I had to tuck the board under my stomach, and do a freestyle stroke while kicking, and I finally made good progress. I enjoy some rough surf, but the power of that water is truly humbling regardless.
Rips are very much a silent killer, and you never realise you are in one until you can't paddle back in. As 'Dantheman' says, waves won't carry you back in, because they aren't breaking', they are just swell... have a look at the australian rip currents for really good clues of how to get out of them
