In the summer of 2011, I was called to play a last-minute solo piano gig at Caffe Vivaldi in the West Village of Manhattan. I called my friend Jeff Hatcher to come and play djembe, and we figured we would play around with some tunes and improvise some jams
Halfway through the set, I was running out of ideas, so I reached out to the few audience members. Suggest a popular song, and we'll do a live re-imagination of the song at that moment. The first request was "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
I had never consciously played this song on the piano (as far as I can remember), but I've heard it thousands of times, so I had a pretty good idea of how the song went. We started playing, and 6 minutes later we had this. I got really excited about the idea of doing an entire show of live, in-the-moment re-imaginations. And that idea has manifested itself in the beginning of this online video series
Keep an eye out for future ReHarm Live videos! (The next ones will be actual videos, not just slideshows)
