CHAPTER 18
*As soon as they get back into their house, Nick comes sprinting down from his room, demanding to know how Brynn is and how her trip to the hospital went. Kevin assures Nick that she is going to be fine, but Joe doesn't say anything. He is too busy thinking about how worried Brynn had been when she thought that he had mistakenly said that he loved her. In an instant, he realized what he had to do. He has to make her realize that he didn't just say that to make her fell better, and that he really did care about her 100%. However, before he can contemplate how to go about this, Kevin interrupts his thoughts.*
KEVIN: *Smiling.* Well, Nick, now that you know that Brynn is okay, would you like to ask Joe how he is? I think he might go into shock soon.
NICK: *Looks confused.* But I thought Brynn was the one who hurt her leg. What's wrong with you, Joe?
KEVIN: *Answering for him.* Oh nothing's wrong with him. Quite the opposite, actually. Go ahead, Joe, tell Nick your news.
*Nick continues to look confused until Joe snaps out of his own thoughts and grins at him.*
JOE: I asked Brynn to be my girlfriend. And she said yes.
NICK: *Completely shocked.* You did? Oh...oh mannn! That's awesome! *He holds up his hand for a high five.* Dude, that's great! I would come celebrate with you, but I'm making dinner tonight.
JOE: Oh, I'll help you!
*Both brothers look at him, eyebrows raised. Joe, volunteering to make dinner? When he didn't have to? What was going on?*
JOE: *In explanation.* I'm just in a good mood.
*Kevin gave Joe another weird look, shrugged, and left the room. Nick and Joe headed for the kitchen. When they have decided what to make and gotten out all of the ingredients needed, Joe turns to Nick.*
JOE: Hey. The real reason I wanted to help you was because I needed to talk to you. I can talk to Kevin later, but he already knows most of the story.
NICK: *Smiling.* Ah, I knew there was an ulterior motive. You have never, in your life, volunteered to make dinner for no reason.
JOE: Oh shut up. I said I needed to talk to you. So listen.
*Joe told Nick all about what had happened since he had left the house yesterday afternoon to go to the park with Brynn. How they had spent a while on the swings, then played tag. How Brynn's fall had ended with them kissing in the sunset. How he had stayed with her through all her doctor's visits, and then how he had stayed with her in the hospital overnight. Lastly, he told Nick how he had asked Brynn to be his girlfriend, and how they had kissed until Brynn realized she had to leave. Throughout Joe's entire story, Nick didn't say anything. He continued to make dinner, listening while Joe sat on the counter and explained everything to him. When Nick was sure Joe had completely finished, he put the chicken into the oven, set the timer, and went to sit on the tabletop, facing Joe.*
JOE: So. What do you think.
NICK: What specifically do you want to know about?
JOE: Well, I guess nothing specific. I just wanted to hear your reaction.
NICK: I told you, I think it's great that you two are going out.
JOE: Yeah, that's what you said before. But I know you have more to say. *Teasing.* You're Nick, you always have an opinion!
NICK: *Amused by his brother's pleading voice.* Of course I do. But the best things...
JOE: *Interrupting him.* ...in life go unsaid. I know, I know. But just tell me what you think about Brynn and me! *Exaggerating, jumping from the table and getting on his knees in front of Nick.* Please, just tell me. I beg of you!
NICK: *Laughing.* Get off the floor, Joe. Okay, I'll tell you.
JOE: *Excited.* Yes! He goes to sit back on the table again. Man, I don't know why I always listen to what you say. You're almost three years younger than me!
NICK: It's because of my great wisdom. You need to make up for your apparent lack of it.
JOE: Hey!
NICK: I'm just kidding. Okay, so do you want to hear what I have to say or not?
JOE: Of course! Go ahead.
NICK: Well. At first, when you told me, I was wondering whether or not you had thought about what you were doing. *Joe starts to interrupt.* No wait, listen. At first I wasn't sure. But when you were talking about her, you didn't just describe Brynn as a friend. You described her as more than that. As a part of your life that you wouldn't ever want to lose. And I can just tell by the way you are acting that you don't have any doubts. *Joe smiles.* So I think you will just have to wait and see.
JOE: *Silent for a minute, still smiling, then he says one word that both boys know means more than they can explain...* Thanks.
