Dreamlike sequence from a 1976 documentary on Jack Donovan and his automata collection. This Cleopatra is an extremely rare machine and the reverential narration is perfect for this tragic beauty. The beginning of this film is is listed as "Classic Automata Film" if you would like to see more. .....Dream on........

I think I adore it so much because it seems very creepy and beautiful at the same time, the thought of someone going through so much trouble to make each little bit work exactly the way they imagine it is fascinating. Very Victorian, slightly steampunk and very cool.

You found what I consider to be one of the best collections of automata (postings by 69mechanik) Their homepage is really interesting - what an art form and an honor for them to restore these amazing works of art. (And other pieces are hauntingly cool and wonderful when not fully restored!) Love me some automata! dHb

It's a shame that the Industrial Revolution and factory production killed off toy-making as an art form.
