Here's a short movie of videos and stills from Greenland that we collected during our 2009 and 2010 expeditions. The theme is: meltwater. You will see canyons through which water flows, supraglacial lakes and ice cracks routing surface water to the bottom of the ice sheet. The vocal background at the beginning is a Shaman Inuit Chant.

Cryoconite begins as airborne sediment spread over the ice by wind. It is composed of mineral dust sucked up from as far away as Central Asian deserts, particles from volcanic eruptions, and soot. The soot particles come from fires both natural and man-made, diesel engines, and coal-fired power plants. Cryoconite is not a new phenomenon: Arctic explorer Nils A. E. Nordenskiöld discovered and named the fine brown silt during his visit to the Greenland ice sheet in 1870.

Please make it clear what the grey-black stuff is in these images. If it is deposits from coal and other industrial processes, we need to know because darker stuff causes melting, doesn't it? And if we keep on talking about CO2 without dealing with another major cause of ice melt, then we are misguided. Mistaken. Inaccurate. Wrong... Please make sure that the public knows what these images mean, and not just post them without adequate explanation. Thanks!

It's a surreal and stunning landscape...amazing footage. It would be beautiful but for what it means we are doing to our planet. :/
