Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WpIUilSW8w

Of note is that the Burleske is the only piano concerto that Richard Strauss wrote. He was known for his operas, tone poems, and lieder. Anecdotal information has it that when Strauss was in his early 20's, he showed the score to the famous pianist/conductor Hans von Bulow; it was pronounced unplayable. Well, thank goodness for the few concert pianists who play the piece, otherwise, it would be gathering dust on museum shelves somewhere.

This was performed in the late 1990's by Richard Bosworth. Accompanying him is the Polish orchestra Filharmonia Sudecka with Anthony Armore conducting. It is one of several rehearsal sessions before the actual concert. (The performance of it is less visually interesting since there are no close-up shots.)

ENJOY!

THIS IS PART 1 OF 2.

  • Its so fast there is no elegance to this performance. I've played this and it just races by. Too bad.

  • Then you probably would not like Martha Argerich's performance...hers is fast as well. But I certainly hope you don't prefer a performance like Glenn Gould; it is very pedestrian. FYI, Gould did not like many composers after Mozart including Debussy and Strauss. He only played their pieces because he was producing a musical documentary series much like Bernstein did.

  • Its too fast, its a mistake but, I think its better, it sounds more expresive, more dificult.

  • Then you probably would like Glenn Gould's performance which I think is way too slow. Do you like Martha Argerich's rendition of it? Hers is also fast like mine. It is probably the best interpretation of that piece and especially with the Berlin Phil, they make it into a totally exhilarating and satisfying experience!

  • Yes, I'm agree with you, Martha Argerich's interpretation it's meaby the best of all, of course she is the best piano player, but y like the Glenn Gould's performans, more sutil, you can percibe better all the piano notes

  • I, myself, do not like the Glenn Gould performance at all. He does not capture the Strauss style and it is too calculating for my tastes. It needs a more mercurial approach much like Argerich.

  • this is difficult as hell!!!! respect to each one who can play it!

  • I adore this piece, so I equally adore hearing many different versions of it. I "found" it when I was 8 years old on a record... Byron Janis was the pianist and I have seldom found one that really thrills me as much. But that is so subjective.....

  • Try working on the music...then decide if you still feel the same way.

  • I don't think this piece is too difficult...come on...
