The history of the modern Azerbaijan army dates back to Azerbaijan Democratic Republic in 1918, when the National Army of the newly formed Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was created on 26 June 1918.

The Armed Forces have four branches: Land Forces, Air Force and Air Defence Force (a united branch), Navy and Peacekeeping Forces. Besides the Armed Forces there are several militarily sub-groups that can be involved in state defence when needed. These are the Interior Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and forces of the State Border Service, which includes the Coast Guard as well. The Azerbaijan National Guard is the first component of the Azerbaijan Army. It is operating as a semi-independent entity of the Azerbaijan Defense Department.

Azerbaijan has deployed 151 of its Peacekeeping Forces in Iraq and another 100 in Afghanistan.

The military expenditures of Azerbaijan for 2009 are set at $2.46 billion USD. Azerbaijan has its own Defense Industry, which manufactures small arms, artillery systems, various military vehicles and military planes and helicopters.

I love how Armenains try to claim that Azerbaijan started the Karabakh war, when the war would never have happened had it not been for the Karabakh Armenians' desire to illegally secede from Azerbaijan.
