I actually just traveled to the Alamo and took the ferry to see the USS Texas. There is indeed a large monument to the Brother of which you speak. Sam Houston was a Mason and did defeat Santa Anna.

Too old? You must only be able bodied and come well recommended. There isn't an age limit for Masons. In most areas you must be at least 18 or 21 to be a Mason.
