I was just there (Simatai) and I would say that it is the best way to see the Great Wall. We rented a van and driver for the day (about 800 RMB), making the drive out much more manageable. The one awesome thing they don't show here is that after you walk along the wall you can take a zipline down from near the top of the wall back to the beginning. You zipline over the river and it's pretty fun.
Cool! That sounds awesome. I didn't know about the zipline, but sounds like I need to film a sequel next time I'm in Beijing. I've also been told that you can camp here again, now that the Olympics are over. Thanks for the comments.
