by Lia Chang/www.liachang.wordpress.com On the second Thursday in December, The Drama Book Shop and Theatre Communications Group (TCG) celebrated the release of the publication of David Henry Hwang's latest play Yellow Face, which received a 2008 OBIE Award and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, with a reading and book signing in New York. In his mock-documentary play, Hwang puts himself center stage, as it explores both Asian identity and race in America. The play begins with the 1990s controversy over color-blind casting for Miss Saigon, and then spins into comic fantasy, in which the character DHH pens a play in protest, and unwittingly casts a white actor as the Asian lead. The standing room only crowd was treated to readings of excerpts of the play by actors Francis Jue and Kathryn Layng, who appeared in the Obie-award winning production at the Public Theater, with Hwang playing himself. The reading was followed with a lively conversation between Edward Albee and Hwang, and a book signing.
