@donnacheer11 Alice and Norma have completely different voices and styles. It's like comparing apples to oranges. Norma had an operatic voice and Alice did not. I don't see where it makes on better than the other though. It's just what you prefer.
It is wonderful to see the lovely Alice Lon, especially in her fabulous full-skirted dresses and fancy petticoats, which were made for her by her mother. She was profiled in TV Guide and we got to see her, her dresses, and petticoats in full color, something that never happened on the Welk show during the 1950s. He didn't start doing color telecasts until the fall of 1965.
Norma Zimmer was (and is) a lovely lady and a fine singer. But Alice Lon really SPARKLED. There's a big difference in this show from the 50s to the 60s. Even when viewed via black-and-white kinescopes, the earlier broadcasts have far greater entertainment value. Alas, people nowadays base their memories of the program on the homogenized "Geritol" version. I sense the considerable contributions Alice made to the popularity of Lawrence Welk have been deliberately underplayed.
Love her dress. Petticoats simply have to come back into fashion. As for Alice over Norma, Alice was a lovely talented lady and a gifted performer but she did not have Norma's vocal range.
Alice Lon was a much better and more musically interesting Champagne Lady than was Norma Zimmer, who was always a little to "sweet" at least for my taste!
