The BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico contaminated several large colonies of birds nesting on Louisiana's barrier islands.
On July 11, 2010 members of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology multimedia team documented an oiling event that occurred on Raccoon Island - one of the largest nesting colonies for pelicans and terns in the region.
Cornell Lab photographer and cinematographer Gerrit Vyn shares video and photographs from the island and describes the scene as he saw it.
@osprey02 I was referring to the brief moments of carelessness that initiates a disaster of such magnitude...and obviously by the video, it is far from being over.

So very sad the damage man can do to Nature in the blink of an eye. It is now April 2011 ~ is there any oil left in the water, on the shores to still further poison these wonderful creatures? :(

Just kills me to see this. Thank you for speaking for these beautiful creatures.
