HSBC Cheltenham Music Festival saw a classical exclusive as James Rhodes played his encore using the latest technology in place of traditional paper music.

Classical pianist James Rhodes, famed for his prodigious talent and rock star attitude, performed a sell-out recital of Bach, Beethoven and Chopin. Following rapturous applause he opted for a Chopin prelude as his final encore. James didn't have his sheet music to hand, so instead turned to his new tablet computer, found an app with the Chopin score, and played from this. To turn the page, all he had to do was tap the screen.

  • I learnt this in a day it's very simple and I am a fan of james but i agree with TheSmoshmy that it's not good that hes reading this simple piece of a iPad I love his hipster ways and everything but just no. I love chopin and I'm pretty sure James rhodes does, so he should have been much more professional about the whole sitiution to be honest.

  • He's a hipster of course he's gonna use a frickin iPad xD

  • Musicians have been reading music on tablets and other electronic devices for years.. I don't know why they made it out to be so revolutionary...

  • @Chezmat1 you sure did at around 2;40? wow I forgive Cortot but to post this?? the gimmick is fun just close your eyes, my dear old dad always listened with his eyes closed especially the Ring the music paints the picture I think.

  • Dear James,

Do try to play the notes in the L.H. chords TOGETHER.I am sure that's how Chopin would have liked it.And do try to synchronise your R.H. with your L.H. And do try to produce a more beautiful sound, less harsh and brittle. And why can't you memorise such a tiny oiece? You really ae trying to achieve fame through tricks and gimmicks which I dislike intensely. This is all so amateurish and so awful pianistically and musically.

0n a purely human level I sympathise with your mental problem

  • Chezmat1 comment below: Definitely a "stick up the ass mentality "

  • I love your music and your story James. You say you like to play classical pieces without their pretentious "stick up the arse." So its not surprising that listeners with a stick up their arse (see two comments below) may not like it!

  • I really question the assumptions behind whoever posted this. For example:

"James Rhodes, famed for his prodigious talent and rock star attitude..." - hmm, never saw a rock star having to use written music!

And then: "James didn't have his sheet music to hand, so instead turned to his new tablet computer...". Why? Why did he not just play it? Was he sight-reading? Doubt it, as that would be a somewhat silly thing to do in an encore. And if he knew the piece, then why the written music?
