Veteran reporter Phillip Knightley knows the spy business better than anyone. This interview uncovers many facets of his illustrious career as one of the worlds foremost investigative journalists.
Knightleys life has been devoted to exposing secrets and lies. The thalidomide scandal he helped break was among 'the biggest stories that the 'Sunday Times' ever tackled.' Having spent decades as a spy-chaser, 'nobody in the whole world has better expertise than him.' He laments the loss of Fleet Street culture but insists upon the continuing need for 'serious journalism, with analysis, interestingly presented, by good writers'.

  • News services being dislocated is one problem. Their lack of independance, from economic and political control is another, and ultimately far worse.

  • These kind of journalists are long gone, unfortunately. I wish it were otherwise - modern news services are largely a joke, connected to big business as they are.
