This was a northern polar launch of a weather sattelite from a Minotour launch vehicle. You can go to Vandenberg AFB's website and see the schedule for the launches. I live in OC about three and a half hours south and we get to see 3 or 4 a year when they launch south. Its pretty cool. Its really funny when the tourist pull over on the freeway and take pics thinking its a UFO or a meteor about to strike. This was from September of 2002. BTW, launches MM3 often, but never armed.

A. Minute Man 3 missiles are nuclear devices. They exploded one of those near Australia? They wouldn't be happy to hear that!
B. Minute Man 3 missiles flying over populace Southern California? Would not bode well for the Air Force had they not gone the right direction and say plowed into a crowded LA skyscraper?
C. MinuteMan 3's have been in service since the 1970s. Why would they start retesting them?
D. What kind of "successful" missile flies in zig-zags to get where it's going?

What is the exact date this was taken? There were a couple such sightings I saw a few years back when I lived in Moreno Valley. I took still photos of the event too. This looks VERY similar, particularly the very erratic looking con-trail. The Air Force says they were testing a Minute Man 3 missile shot from Vandenberg AFB which supposedly "successfully" detonated over the Marshal Islands. Four problems with this story:

It Is A JET!!!!!!

Very reasonable and a well educated guess, i give you a thumbs up Bygjohnsn
If this is Yosemite that what you see is a missle launch from Vandenberg Airforce Base. The trail at left is the exhaust plume in the atmosphere. The video starts with the missle just leaving the atmosphere. Thats why it's exhaust looks like a fan. They're pretty cool to watch.
