Dr. Moore-Olufemi:
Holiday season is here upon us and I'm just here to remind parents about um holiday safety and childhood injury prevention. So the two things I want you to remember are: to anticipate childhood injuries and participate in preventing those childhood injuries. The most common injury we see are falls so it's very important for the parents to check balcony doors and windows. And another common injury we see this time of year: motor vehicle accidents. Safety seats are very important. Make sure you know how to operate the child safety seat. Another common injury that we see during this time of the year are burn injuries. Be very careful when you're transferring hot liquids that you, uh, put the children in a safe area and then transfer hot liquids. Another injury that we actually see, um, is auto-pedestrian when cars hit little kids. So as you're out shopping, be very very careful when kids are getting out of cars or going in the parking lot running around because sometimes it's hard for people to see the kids as they're running. Another injury that we see during this time of year are also bicycle injuries, go-cart injuries, ATV injuries, make sure they have helmets and get adult supervision. A lot of people will be getting new televisions this season. Make sure that if you have cords associated with those televisions to tape those cords down if you have them going across doorways. One last thing that we see a lot of that people may not talk about are family stressors. Little kids, I know, are very anxious to get things for Christmas and sometimes finances might be tight. If you feel that that stress is coming on, walk away from that situation and come back and readdress them.
