Being emboldened and deluded in equal portion, I decided to add the vocal to this beautiful song. I love what Steeleye Span did to it. But heck, I'm not Maddie Prior and I'm still working on my all-electric backing technique. Oh and yes, I changed the gender slightly rather than put on a wig and shave the beard. @geoff1945 Yes, but I like your version better!:-) Really. It was a song from my Childhood. My mother used to sing it for me. I was searching for it for such a long time.

I didn't know that there was a band who made it... I know, bad! So, now you are in my favorites too!:-).( If you are okay with it.)

WOW - small world indeed if I remember seeing the Spinners way back. Coincidentaly I've just watched your Tom Paxton cover enjoyed it very much.

Thanks for the reminder about folk traditions. I read a story by Tom Paxton in which he foreworded, "Many storytellers will retell this in their own way as is their right......' Later, I heard the story told by the Spinners.Some years on I told it in a school and an old guy asked me where I had heard the story. I said it was my favourite folk group in the 60s who told it. He said,"actually we didn't tell it that way but I like your version better" He was Tony Davis. Small world!
