Will sharks be the next endangered species? Research is underway to rehabilitate the killer fish. SA's unique Shark Institute exists to protect humans from shark attacks. Every morning it sends a team of researchers up the Natal Coast to check on 400 nets shielding the most popular beaches. They untangle sharks, dolphins and sting rays trapped in the nets and repair any gaping holes. Many creatures, however, die before they can be rescued. This has prompted research into protection which does not kill sharks - electromagnetic waves. The director of the Natal Sharks board explains how divers use magnetic waves to deter sharks with small electric shocks. This could be further exploited for the use of swimmers. Dead sharks caught in the nets are taken back to the Institute where great slabs of bleeding flesh are sawn off for examination. One Austrian scientist reveals her fascination with the shark and her aim to find out how long they live. The Great White enjoys official protection in South African waters and research into this particular species is carried out through a tagging system.

  • @soothsayer1985 I take it that you and your loved ones stay away from the beachs? You'd better! I just witnessed a shark attack a week back! These babies mean BUSINESS! I say that they should all ALL be exterminated. The same as you would remove any other creature that has been deemed dangerous to man. Why take unnecessary chances with your wife and kids?

The CHILDREN, leftie-lunatics. The CHILDREN. Remember them? You seem to use their plight when it suits you.

  • Sorry, but you're never going to convince the average person that a 3000 pound flesh-eating creature with a mouth full of razor-sharp serrated teeth is somehow a misunderstood creature.

  • totallly agree

sharks do what they do naturally. they were born in the ocean for a reason you idiots.

like any animal it has its own instincts, if you are going to go into its habitat it will react, just like us.

  • Keep the nets away : they kill more sharks , turtles, whales, dolphins ! than the sharks bite people !!!

They NEVER intentionally attack people ; what the media call a shark "attack" is really a shark "mistake" : we are NOT a food source for them.

But take care if you eat them ! alarming concentrations of mercury are found in sharks : this can cause neurobiological deseases, and also sexual dysfunction and sterility !

  • @Rede36m3 I only slightly agree.. No thanx to "Jaws" it gave sharks a really bad name. But consider this.. We know very little, evn to this day about Great White's, Yet they are on the protected species (endangered) list because of the way humans slaughter them and other sharks.. If we, as humans can go to the god damned moon or clone a fuckin sheep, we can most certainly figure out non- harmful ways for "research".. Just sayin man..

  • @hahanoob01 Now thats real smooth and mature... Tell ya what.. The next time you have an opinion about something, write it down on your hand, then stick it in a fucking blender!!

  • @admanQ8 I completely agree, my friend !! Words of wisdom :)

  • want to know why mating levels are at a low in the natural world? Well, if your a shark at the aquarium could you get sexually exited by some loser in a green 'conserve' t-shirt giving your mate a rectal exam? i think not.

  • The less sharks the better

  • Idiots.

Read the description carefully, the scientists aren't the ones killing the sharks, they scavenge through the nets to untangle any creatures and whatever is a shark and dead is taken back to the institute and researched.

Stop the baseless accusations, blame the idiots that set up the net in the first place, not these people trying for trying to be productive.
