If anything, John comes off of Hillel Slovak as a protege. Plus, Hillel is really the 'original' Chili Pepper, and the only person of the group that understood heroin and drug habits/withdrawals (among other things) better than anyone else in the group. Maybe it's a reason why a lot of the other members kept using over the years....

he wasn't the driving force, john is just as good. hillel just fueled the really old funk/punk sound they had, and john gives the band a diff. sound.
