Or it =WAS= a Whale of a Time! (Last season: 2000)
Here's a tour of Whlaom Park, as of 8/7/2010.
There's a "Fun House" at the end, only that the fun was missing, with the park.

  • "its a little missing" LOL. I miss going to that place, I went there about 30 times. I loved driving by and seeing the big whale sign and the rides. I remember the wood roller coaster, but it shut down cause they didn't have enough money to fix it. Shortly after, they closed. Then came in the deconstruction. I still miss the place. :(

I never cared for the place after the Pirate's Den burned down in 1981. That was THE ride I came for.

Surprised the wood coaster was in bad shape. It was completely overhauled and repainted in 1986, and again in the late 90's. Never went on it, but it looked like it was going to fall apart at any moment.

  • It closed in 2000.

  • @elevatorsonly

I think I said that. Don't have time to review.

Ironically, it was featured on PBS's Family Amusement Parks special, recorded the very last year it was operating (2000, as we know).

So you've been to the Galleria. :)

I just lost nearly all interest in the place when that ride burned down, and replaaced it with crap.

Whalom didn't grasp the concept of "keeping with the times", which hurt it considerably.

Oh ... we never really went onto the attractions as a older kid in LHS. We went there to socialize. On Friday/Saturday nite, there were bright lights, somewhat crowded, and noisy. Enough distractions to feel as though you're not in "an abandoned to-be-demolished shopping mall" .

  • @StevenL1967

I remember the "Priate's Den", and when it burned down, I never really had as fond a feeling for the place.

It's a lot better to see this, that the rotting, collapsing structures, and the Comet in ruins.

  • Wow, thanks for the video. Whalom Park was THE place to gather when I was at LHS in the mid 70s ... whether it was smoking tires on the strip, or meeting your buds in the park, we had a good time. I had fun there when I was 8 years old and had a different kind of fun as a teenager. Sad to see it gone
