Suggestion 2: Check out the left4dead Wikia project.

Answer 2: The survivors are supposedly carriers, or immune (could be a bit of both since there are 4 of them). No matter how much contact they have with the infected, they can't catch the infection. There is speculation that the infected see the survivors as if they are the zombies => kill at all costs.

Also the infection is passed through any transfusion of bodily fluids and even in the air (smoker smoke...), not just puking...

Suggestion 1: Go play left4dead's Sacrifice campaign before making such a stupid comment.

Answer 1: In the Sacrifice campaign/comic, this happens. You spend the campaign looking for a sailboat, then in the finale, you are raising a bridge in order to let the boat through.
