The animal kingdom can be divided into 14 main groups. Nine of these groups contain invertebrate animals. The simplest, most primitive are sponges, coelenterates (jellyfish and coral), flatworms, annelid worms, and molluscs (snails and clams). Then there are arachnids (spiders and scorpions), crustaceans (crabs and shrimp), insects, and echinoderms (starfish and sea urchins). Finally there are the vertebrate animals. These are fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
