One of the best unknown Affirmed/Laz stories was how there was a horse here at Hollywood called Esops Foibles back in 1977. He would later go on to win the Louisiana Derby, as well as the Arkansas Derby-very talented! His connection made the remark in the DRF that it was a good thing for Affirmed that Laz had him in New York as EF was a superstar in the making. Laz then ships Affirmed to Hollywood and he totally destroyed EF in the HWJC.

Affirmed on the inside, Alydar on the outside, heads apart, head and shoulders above the rest down the Belmont homestretch, Alydar actually getting a head in front in mid-stretch only for Affirmed to regain the lead shortly thereafter, not to mention Chic Anderson calling... Hmmm..... Something tells me, cf1970, we would see and hear the same thing exactly nine months later :) Thanks again, cf1970! God bless!

Have never seen the entire series b4. Just great! I agree with xm11: it really is too bad that their last meeting was spoiled. Unfortunately, Cauthen was under suspension and Pincay decided to test the tolerance of New York stewards on the turn at Saratoga.

I wonder if Affirmed would have outgutted him if Alydar was on the inside and Affirmed on the outside in their races. In reality Alydar being on the outside always had more ground to cover than Affirmed and a number of the results would have been reversed if had been the other way around. A shame Affirmed cut him off in the Travers when Alydar tried to go inside, have no doubt Alydar would have won that race if the interference hadn't taken place.

If I had seen these races at the time I never would have picked Alydar in the Derby. I remember a sharp guy saying before the Derby that he couldn't understand why Alydar was favored, since Affirmed had outgutted him several times at 2. This race looks to be a prime example. Affirmed was just a bit quicker and more versatile.
