Dear Lord, Please return soon... And if you're not going to do that... Please give us back Ronald Reagan.

Does anyone know if the last sentence of the speech "slipped the surly bonds of Earth to touch the face of God" was Peggy Noonan or was he quoting a poem? Just curious.

Yeah, no, you're familiar with Peggy Noonan, I assume? She wrote this speech and the "Boys of Pointe du Hoc" speech.

You know that Reagan wrote most of his speeches, right?

Ronald Reagan quoted from the poem "High Flight" by John Gillespie Magee in his speech (written by Peggy Noonan) first and last lines from the poem High Flight: "Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth – Put out my hand and touched the Face of God."

I was born in 1980, and when I was a little kid, I always thought for some reason that he was my uncle or something. Not sure why, but he always seemed so relatable, even though I wasn't old enough to understand politics at all. Whether you agree with his politics or not, you can't deny that he truly WAS a great communicator.

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace. Where never lark, or even eagle flew — And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, - Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
