Otago Lane is a small, unimposing gem in the conservation area of Glasgows West-End, with a nation-wide reputation for its independent shops, culture energy, and has been largely untouched in its 2-century history. It is now under grave threat from developers who propose to build massive city- centre style housing complex with 163 flats and commercial units attaching onto the Otago Lane mews gable and directly opposite in the narrow cobbled lane.

Otago Lane, the last surviving hub of independent culture and life in Glasgows West End, is under threat from a new 163 private flat and retail spaces development.

Institutions such as the Tchai-Ovna tea house, Ken Chapelle Antique Clock repairer, Voltaire and Rousseau the independent second-hand and antiquarian bookshop in Glasgows west end have rallied together with local residents to campaign to put a halt to the development proposals which will effectively put an end to a whole life style in Glasgows West End.

The first half of this video feature covers the main buildings development proposal with interviews with representatives from the developer's "community engagement team" and architecs. The video covers aspects of the alterations to the houses on Otago Street , the widening of the lane, the new residential "Drum Block" situated on the site of Tchai Ovna Tea Garden. And the landscaping on the bank of the Kelvin. The proposal is estimated to take 18 months to complete.

The second half features local tradespersons and residents voicing their concerns and opinions of the development. and how it will impact on their lives and the surrounding area.

Planning proposals have already been lodged ....

  • The deadline for objections by the public to plans to overdevelop on Otago Lane is nearing.

    We need your support.

Please send an email or a letter to the DRS (the planning department of Glasgow city council). The email and address are:

    Executive Director

    Development and Regeneration Services

    229 George Street

    Glasgow

    G1 1QU

    planning.representations@drs.glasgow.gov.uk

    include the application number: 10/03061/DC

  • @InternetAndDigital A new submission has been made by the developer that adapts certain features of the large blocks they plan to build. all these are superficial and aesthetic but do not change the issue, that if the buildings are built they will effectively destry the community in the lane as well as the environment and the conservation area. Jobs will be lost as well as the unique culture that surrounds Otago Lane , which has caused it to become so well known further afield.

  • @InternetAndDigital You can object to the plans wherever you are in the world, whether you're in the immediate areaor live in Australia or Japan. Your objections will count if you include your whole name and address, the date and the case number.

    See saveotagolane [.] co [.] uk/What [.] html

  • @InternetAndDigital Your objections do work. The reason why the development has not even come to the planning committee is because of the overwhelming public response in the form of letters. This has forced the council to act transparently and carefully and the developer to withdraw his applications. However, we need to match his persistence in order to save the lane.

  • @InternetAndDigital He will continue to try to debase our support by reapplying (and hence invalidating past objections), and so we must continue to keep up the support.

  • The community marches to save Glasgow’s Lanes.

  • Dont try to fix whats not broken.

    It's a great video

  • The proposed buildings are in no way in keeping with the surrounding area. This development proposal should be vigorously opposed. Community should be placed above profit for a change.

  • years since iv been down here need to go back soon later thise week they cant close the lane also is the beautiful white cat still wandering around that was a freindly wee cat

  • Glasgow Shitty Council need to be put up against a wall and shot for even thinking of considering the development plans. Same as when they threatened the Botanics, same as their threatening that garage near it, and all the other places in the only part of Glasgow that looks like an actual real city.

  • From Save our Lane - Dear all, the planning application has been resubmitted and objections have to be in by the 16th of June. I'll post info as I have it but for now, feel free to send a letter if you've got one ready, or drop it into one of the boxes at tchai ovna or roots and fruits!

    Thanks

  • It'll ruin the place if it goes ahead. As usual it's all about profiting not improvement.
