Frog fish were encountered together at a location called TK-2
in the Lembeh Straits of North Sulawesi Indonesia. Normally,
frog fish are solitary and ambush prey from concealed locations. This time they were together on the bottom, and when I turned on my Keldan Lights, they followed me up into the water column. I really couldn't believe it at the time
and i was obliged to swim backwards, and I went up to keep from stirring the bottom, and was amazed when they followed right up to my lens. This was repeated 9 times, and here is one of the better ones. I was amazed.

  • Is that fancy one in the center a male...surrounded by females? ??

  • Not sure. I would guess the orange one is male, and the calico

    is female. Just a guess.

LIfe is good here, hows about there?

  • Bizarre! Never seen anything like it, at TK2, or anywhere else. Perhaps mating behavior? Lucky you being in Lembeh!!! Have fun, and safe diving.

  • Thanks, yes, it was one of those days, the frog fish swam up to my lens 9 different times. It was like being in a dream. There's a clip on YouTube depicting frog fish mid-water mating, somewhere.
