You get a good sense of the size of the buoy here compared to the a-frame operator on the left and aft-deck crew.
A ~1 foot kevlar rope is lowered to a 4-point harness. The buoy's bow is tethered to a coiled steel line reel for added control as the ship rocks in the sea. There are also two smaller kevlar ropes attached to each side of the buoy, which are controlled by small hydraulic "tuggers." Once within 5 miles of the deployment station, the deck straps will be released.
