Joe Morello （ジョー・モレロ） Just In Time

デイブ・ブルーベック・クァルテットは2人のプレイヤーでもっていた。1人はポール・デスモンドで、もう1人はここで紹介するジョー・モレロ。特に、モレロでなかったらあ­の「変拍子」ジャズは成り立たなかったのではないだろうか？とさえ思います。そのタイム・キーパーたるドラミングは他者を寄せ付けない感があります。そんな、天才・モレロ­がリーダーとなってレコーディングした珍しいアルバムがこの「It's　About　Time」です。アルバムに納められた曲はすべて「Time」の文字が入っており、自らのタイム・キーパーぶりを重ね合わせた「洒落」でしょうか・・・。さて、このアルバ­ムではフィル・ウッズのアルトが全編にわたって豪快に吹きまくっているのが聴きどころです。そして、もうひとつはゲーリー・バートンの参加でしょう。この録音時のバートン­は弱冠18歳。その溌剌とした演奏は将来の大成を予感させるものが感じとれます。そして、これはバートンの記念すべきファースト・レコーディングとなった演奏です。

Joe never wanted to sound like Buddy. Joe was in how own league. While they were both genius drummers, most prefer the style of Joe for overall composition, skill and musicality. Buddy was generally known as an attack snare drummer.  Their solos are so different in musicality...............each trying to achieve their own idea of perfection, while creating incredible music for drummers across the world to admire forever.

We miss you, Joe. At your best you could sound a lot like Buddy - which, to me, is the best compliment you could get in the context of the music being played. And that ride cymbal - beautiful. I'd not heard this before and would love to find the original recording - thanks for posting this.
