Les Éolides was written in 1876 and premiered the following year. This beautiful music was composed by César Franck, who was inspired by a poem based on the classical myth of Eolus, the Greek god of the wind. In Homer's Odyssey, the Éolides are the breezes which are sent by Poseidon to aid Odysseus in his return voyage. This orchestral poem is set to moving images from nature: the breezes caress fields of grass, gently rustle flowers and trees, and hold aloft the birds of the air. Dedicated to lovers of peace and conservation. Music performed by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Yan Pascal Tortelier. Video edited by Gilda Tabarez on May 1, 2009.

  • Just when I "thought" I knew all of Francks music, and indeed as an Organist played his complete works, this comes as a magnificent revelation. But the beauty you have created here with your mastery and artistc talent of combining music with visual is beyond awesume. I am sure that if the composer would have known that in over a hundred years his work would have been presented in such a way he would have been brought to tears. Just too beautiful for words. Absolutely exquisite!

  • Many thanks for your kindness and the five stars! I am delighted that you enjoyed the video. I thought this piece by Franck seemed rather neglected. I first heard it on the radio when I was about 14 and was blown away! I never knew that decades later the Internet would enable me to do something like this -- it's so fun to share my love for classical music with others and to enjoy the fabulous content that others share, such as your own awe-inspiring channel!!

  • Was it his symphony in C that used to be a regular feature of the Proms? So different from the German masters and so very welcome in contrast. He left a deep impression on me 60

years ago, this reminds me of his unique musical voice, wonderful, delicate melodies unusual

for the time. What a great joy to hear.

  • Many thanks for posting this beautiful music and the images which illustrate it so perfectly. Cesar Franck is my favourite composer, and I'm always delighted to find others who share my love of his music - being a Franck fan can get a bit lonely at times!!

  • It is so beautiful, so gorgeous!

  • This could very well be the precursor to the Impressionists. A lovely favourite of mine by a favourite of mine.

  • What a great talent you are to accomplish this!

You let the nature speak a poem!

You let the trees, the corn and the sunflowers dance to the music of César Franck!

And all is so in harmony with everything.

    BRAVA, BRAVA BRAVISSIMA!

    This is a great masterpiece!!!

  • A pleasure for sure. This is a most fascinating work for Franck did not really become Franck until about the last 10 years of his life. But, he refused to give up despite the critics views and mocking of him. It lacks Francks trade-mark modulations so to speak, but regardless, it stands as a truy gorgeous work of art.
