Housing Minister Soita Shitanda has ruled out compensation for owners of slum dwellings ahead of the planned relocation of slum residents in Soweto area in Kibera. As Jane Kiyo reports, mixed feelings among residents have characterised the run-up to relocation to improved housing.

  • Just another show piece for the very few. What about the other one million KIBERA residents, Raila. You have been MP for kibera for twenty years and done almost nothing for the people you supposedly represnt.

  • i give them a max. 3 years .. to see if they can maintain the houses. (The Govt and the Residents).. they cant .. you dont build houses that will be used like matatus this way.

good idea but not well thought ..

  • I am very happy for you guys hope more will be built. Thanks Raila Odinga and Soita shitanda

  • This is very positive, give credit where it's due. There is no need to complain even when a good thing has been brought to fruition. Kenya is a third world country and if it can get to providing this kind of housing to all slum dwellers, it will have achieved the unimaginable. Wonderful first step and hopefully the progress will be sustained.

  • well i lived around there and when i am here i dream of ways to get capital in order to help so even a quick fix is better that all that i have witness there so thats how i feel. strategies are great but how long should they wait when water is money, sanitation is not adequate. najua corruption is there but what are we doing nothing because in order for us to change a thing there we must be will to die because the government is willing and ready to kill us.

  • Gud job GOK but more can be done....gud first step....am just worried that this houses might not be designed for soo many occupants as they r being put in..

  • The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Kudos to Gok on this one. Positive and encouraging. Yes, yes there are still issues but I never thought I would see the day that slum dwellers get (almost) free housing.

    Something to not complain about.

  • Wananchi should have more than "a spot with running water". I care more about the slums in Kenya because that's where I am from.

And for a government where corruption is so rampant and taxpayers' hard earned money is misused most of the time, I will not settle for "just a spot with running water" I am all for strategic planning and not quick fixes!!

I know the people getting the flats are appreciative but I also know that more can be done.

  • Feabits, what have you done for Kenyans??!! And it's not about negative attitudes but about giving people the very basic needs in a healthy and safe environment.

  • men they got a spot with running water now so all this negative attitude should stop. its not like any of u with all these comments have done anything for the people. plus slum are not only in Kenya there those who don't have there for they appreciate
