Tragic what happens in war. One wonders if the Britain they died for was truly worth it. RIP.

@WELLBRAN A pity such "respect" didnt extend to the Pacific war where Japanese and US sailors shot many survivors without thinking twice!

My Grandfather was a Mechanical Engineer and worked for Metropolitan Vickers based in Trafford Park, Manchester. He was according to my late Mother given an award for his contribution towards his design of gears that were used in the Hoods propulsion system.

@mikelsok thats very interesting I wonder if you could follow it up and do some research, i wonder where you could find Vickers old records. might be worth looking into it and a good story for your local newspaper or TV station? The people such as you Grandad are unsung heroes.

I am German, but I never felt any kind of enthusiasm when I learned about the faith of the hood. Of course, battleships were made for war, but I always understood the sinking of ships like the Hood or Bismarck as a tragedy, as there is always the life of the bravest and most disziplined men sacrified.
My respectful salut to the killed Soldiers of the Hood.

Thankyou for your comment, yes i have heard that many German Naval crews stood to attention on board when ships were sunk, as respect, likewise Royal navy ships would search for hours to find German naval survivors, they were all seamen, total respect for each other.
