Isaac Stern: Symphonie Espagnole, Opus 21 in D minor (1) (Lalo, 1874) - CBS, 1963

Stern is soloist, and Ormandy conducts the Philadelphia Orchestra, in this 1963 performance of the first movement from the Lalo Symphonie Espagnole, Op. 21. I purchased the cassette tape (serial number MYT 37811) pictured in the video above in the early 90s, shortly after CBS released it as part of the "Great Performances" series.

Isaac Stern (ur. 21 lipca 1920 roku w Kremenets, zm. 22 września 2001 roku w Nowym Jorku) - ukraiński wirtuoz skrzypiec. Urodził się w mieście Kremenets, wówczas należącej do Ukrainy, współcześnie do Rosji, lecz w pierwszym roku życia jego rodzice przeprowadzili się do San Francisco, gdzie dorastał. Naukę gry na skrzypcach rozpoczął w wieku 8 lat, jego nauczycielem był Naoum Blinder. Pierwszy koncert smyczkowy dał w 1934 roku. W czasie II wojny światowej grał dla aliantów. Po wojnie w dalszym ciągu dawał koncerty, nagrywał, a także zajął się odkrywaniem młodych talentów, z czego najsłynniejsi to Yo-Yo Ma, Jian Wang, Itzhak Perlman i Pinchas Zukerman. Dużą popularność przyniosło mu wykonanie utworów w filmie Skrzypek na dachu. W 1999 roku wydał pamiętniki My First 79 Years. Zmarł w 2001 roku na niewydolność serca. Isaac Stern zdobył wiele licznych nagród, z czego najważniejsze to: Nagroda Grammy w kategorii Best Instrumental Soloist's Performance (with orchestra) (1962, 1963, 1965, 1982); Nagroda Grammy w kategorii Best Chamber Music Performance (1971, 1992); Sonning Award (1982); Kennedy Center Honors (1984); Nagroda Wolfa (1987); National Medal of Arts (1991); Medal Wolności (1992).

Stern always new how to breathe life into the "warhorses" I always feel as if I'm hearing it for the first time. There may have been others that I looked up to as violinists but as a musician very, very few can compare.
