Assagai was an Afro-rock band from South Africa. It was active in the early 1970’s. It consisted of four members: Louis Moholo, Mongezi Feza, Fred Coker, and Dudu Pukwana. They recorded for the British label Vertigo Records.
Assagai’s self-titled debut album was released in 1971. It was reissued in CD by Repertoire Records in 1994.
Their second and final album, Zimbabwe, was released later in 1971. The album was re-released as LP by Music for Pleasure label, but under a different title, AfroRock.

Love this track - great mix of pop, rock and Afro-jazz beats. Couldn't get it out of my head for ages after I first heard it. This may have been the first African album I ever bought (or it may have been Fela Kuti with Ginger Baker post Cream - so long ago...). The line up on the first album also included Charles Ononogbo on bass and Bizo Mnggikana on tenor sax. Dudu Pukwana was on alto sax and Mongezi Feza was on cornet. Louis Moholo on drums. Fred Coker on guitar.
