Palpatined kept everyone in the dark about his true identity for decades. Including Mace Windu and Master Yoda not to mention the entire Jedi Council and everyone in the senate and his constituants back on Naboo. He didn't just use the dark side, he WAS the dark side.

Did we both see the same three movies? Palpatine only took over the Republic because it was full of morons! The Senate sat with their thumbs up their asses as the Trade Federation took over Naboo. The Queen didn't even call the Obi-Wan, Qui Gon and her ship's crew and her handmaidens, all witnesses to the invasion. There are no less then three different things she could have done that would have been smarter then what she ended up doing. That's just the Phantom Menace!
